Amendments to the monetary jurisdication of the District and Regional Magistrate's Courts

There have been recent amendments made to the monetary jurisdiction for causes of actions in respect of both the District and Regional Magistrates’ Courts.  The amendments became effective as of 1 June 2014.

 

These amendments are applicable to cases where unpaid levies or rents are being recovered through the courts.

 

The amendments are as follows:-

1)    The District Magistrates’ Court now has the jurisdiction to hear matters, where the cause of action is a claim for an amount of R200 000.00 or less. (previously their monetary jurisdiction was up to R100 000.00)

 

2)    The Regional Magistrates’ court now has jurisdiction to hear matters where the cause of action is a claim for an amount between R200 000.00 – R400 000.00. (previously their monetary jurisdiction was between R100 000.00 – R300 000 .00
